The Wolseley – W1
IMM and I decided to have a few days off recently and planned a romantic weekend in Bath. Unfortunately we both came down with stinking colds the day we finished work and our lovely long weekend turned in to spluttering, lemsip fuelled weekend of grumpiness.
On the final day of our ‘holiday’ we decided that we were well enough to go outside and managed to get a booking at The Wolseley for breakfast. I’ve been wanting to go here for over a year and our two previous bookings had been cancelled due to work commitments. So finally, we arrived at Green Park in the middle of a snow storm and stood outside the impressive exterior.
I was expecting something more like a hotel dining room, but in fact it was far more relaxed but still very impressive. All black, cream and gold, with a double high ceiling and with immaculate attention to detail evident in every single item in the room.
I ordered my coffee and the eggs Benedict and as I slowly defrosted, there was an air of anticipation. The coffee arrived and it was as pretty as a picture .
The eggs Benedict looked promising – the cap of hollandaise a thick, smooth, lemony delight. The ham was generous and quite easily the best ham i’ve had so far on the quest – nothing comes close to the quality.
I think quality pretty much sums this up, every element was made with the finest ingredients. Looks wise – I think the
Maze Grill has the edge, but for taste this wins hands down.
I’d love to be able to comment on the scrambled eggs and brioche that IMM had, but it disappeared before I had chance to look at it! Apparently it was good. For my birthday last year I planned to come to the Wolsesy for breakfast and splash out on a bottle of Krug. So I will be going back to complete the plan, hopefully with less coughing. Five Stars.
