Maze Grill – Mayfair W1

Eggs Benedict at the Maze GrillGordon Ramsay must be one of the best known Chefs in the country, however i’ve rarely had an opportunity to eat in his restaurants. Maze and the Maze Grill are both on Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, with the Maze Grill being the more relaxed side of the venture. I was delighted to discover that they served breakfast and even more delighted when IMM whisked me there for a Sunday breakfast outing.

It actually serves breakfast for the Marriott Hotel next door and on a very cold January Sunday was quiet. The menu consists of Hot buffet, Continental buffet or a fairly short a la carte menu which contains the Eggs Benedict.

The Eggs Benedict consisted of two eggs, two rashers of bacon on half a muffin. A lesson in how to poach a perfect egg, faultless. The bacon was thick, salty and delicious, the hollandasie thick with a tang of lemon. I was in seventh heaven, easily the best Eggs Benedict i’ve had so far on my quest.

It was only half way through that I realised that it wasn’t faultless. The balancing of the eggs and bacon on half a muffin looked beautiful, however I was soon left with a plate covered in delicious egg yoke, hollandaise and bacon without any bread to mop it up. I was tempted to go to the kitchen and beg for the other half to the muffin.

The atmosphere was wonderfully relaxed and the service extremely good, it was also very reasonably priced in comparison to other Eggs Benedicts of this standard (£9.50 and worth every penny).

Unfortunately the star rating system doesn’t do half marks, but i’d like to give this 4.5. So close to being perfect, but just not quite there.

Woot! I just decided that I will only ever get Eggs Benedict at places you score at 4 or more. Which means this is a given! Did you have to book for breakfast or did you just show up?

Hi there, I stumbled into your blog via flickr and just wanted to say hello and say that I love the concept of this blog. I love eggs benedict too, but don't really know where is the definitive version in London, so yours will be a useful one for me to visit every now and again.

I’ve never been in Maze Grill but it has always looked to me as a fancy place. 4.5 is a good score. Perfection is very rare. Manne I don’t know is the reservation obligatory but if I were you I would prefer to call earlier.
