Eat. – Paddington W2
During a particularly lovely fishing trip last October with Marica, 2010 was designated ‘The Year of Sport’. In order to kick things off in style i’d managed to get tickets to the Welsh Open Snooker competition in Newport. So Saturday morning found me heading towards Paddington Station for our trip to Wales.
It is very rarely that I find myself with a reason to go to Newport, other than being the home of two groups of people who I have a lot of respect for (The Charitists and Goldie Lookin’ Chain), there isn’t much else to recommend it. But i’d thought i’d start the journey with a good breakfast.
I found a mention of Eggs Benedict at Paddington Station in the comments section of the London Review of Breakfast, so I headed to Eat, high above the station to get breakfast. They have a short, hot breakfast menu which contains an ‘Eggs Benedict’ which is described (helpfully) as a ‘hot toasted muffin’.
The cold muffin didn’t look particularly inspiring and I waited nervously as it was put between a sandwich toaster to heat up. The muffin contained scrambled egg and some rather gray looking ham – I delved around trying to find a
hollandaise substitue but nothing was in evidence.
Whether or not this is Eggs Benedict is open to debate (well, not much of a debate, in fact no debate at all), however it was ok for what it was. Hot scrambled egg and ham in a muffin – if I ever have a hangover and i’m near an Eat i’ll be going in for one of these, but I don’t think it has any place in this quest.
